Rule #5: Eat Mindfully

Ever finish a meal and not remember what it tasted like? Are you swallowing bites whole? Do you work during lunch like I do? During the program, you’ll be asked to focus on mindfulness techniques for an entire week. You can get started by using your mealtimes to sit and eat mindfully. So many of us eat while performing other tasks or being entertained by a television, smartphone, or computer. A quiet, settled atmosphere promotes ideal digestion and turning on of the parasympathetic nervous system, designed to support this process. Your digestive processes will be compromised if you share your eating time with distractions such as watching TV, checking e-mail, or getting engaged in heated discussions. Enjoying a meal should not be another obligation on your daily to-do list; try approaching it as a time both to relax and to recharge.

Also try to focus on the food itself, savoring its flavors and textures. Sit down, close your eyes, be thankful for your food, and take small, conscious bites. Try holding your fork in the opposite, less dominant hand. This will automatically slow down your eating. And limit your distractions to the people you’re eating with. Think of it as a way to honor the gift of food and the greater blessings of life. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to downshift a few gears, bring a greater sense of awareness to your food and the act of eating, and get in sync with fellow diners and your environment or just with yourself.
